The Hunting Experience
Hunting in Africa is – for many – a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and at Rocklands Safaris, our approach to hunting is traditional, ethical, and respectful. We use fair-chase methods, and we don’t believe in rushing clients or taking chances on poor shots.
You’ll hunt with a qualified PH and tracker who knows the terrain and game movement well. Depending on the hunting packages South Africa you’ve picked, or the species you’re after and conditions on the day, we hunt by:
- Walk-and-stalk
- Blind hunting (bow and rifle)
- Night hunting for specific species (legal and seasonal regulations apply)
The Eastern Cape gives you a mix of open grasslands, thick bush pockets, ridge lines, and valleys. That means varied hunting conditions and good game opportunities. We stick to one simple rule: hunt properly or don’t hunt at all.

Rifles and Ammunition
A few airlines allow you to travel with your own firearm into South Africa. Please check with your airline to confirm this. If you want to bring your own rifle, bring a rifle you shoot well. For most plains game, the following work well:
- .270
- .308
- .30-06
- .300 Win Mag
For tougher species or if you plan on night hunting bushpig, heavier calibers are advised. When you arrive, we’ll head to the range and check your rifle together. Travel knocks scopes sometimes, so it’s always better to confirm before we head out.
If you’d rather not travel with a rifle, we have rifles available that are set up correctly for local conditions. Ammo guidance: 40–60 rounds per caliber is plenty. Rifle hire is paid per bullet at $6 per round for plains game, and $10 per round for dangerous game.
Bow Hunting
Bow hunters are welcome, and the property is set up for it. We offer both blind and walk-and-stalk opportunities depending on your preference and ability.
Suggested bow setup:
- Minimum draw weight: 60 lbs
- Quality broadheads — fixed or mechanical both work if they fly true
- Bring enough arrows
Bow hunting here requires patience. Expect quiet sits, shot opportunities under 30 yards, and a good chance at quality animals if you’re prepared.
What About the Airport?
Book your flight to land in East London or Port Elizabeth airport in South Africa. A representative for Rocklands Safaris will be waiting at the airport for you and will bring you directly to the lodge in an air-conditioned vehicle.
Typical Day in Camp
Hunting days here are full but relaxed. A usual schedule looks like this:
- Early morning coffee and light breakfast
- Morning hunt
- Brunch back at camp
- Midday rest
- Afternoon hunt
- Dinner and fire-side time
Things move according to the animals, weather, and what you’re targeting. If night hunting is planned, we shift the schedule.
Laundry is done daily, meals are hearty, and you’ll have a comfortable room with hot water and everything you need. You’re here to hunt. We’ll worry about the rest.

What to Pack on a Hunting Safari
Keep clothing simple:
- Neutral or earth-tone clothing
- Comfortable, worn-in boots
- Warm layers (mornings and evenings can be cool)
- Hat and sunscreen
Binoculars are helpful. Gloves optional. You don’t need a massive wardrobe. Laundry is done daily.
Bring any personal medications, chargers, and travel documents. That’s about it. If you’ve forgotten something, we’ll sort it out.
Trophy Handling and Taxidermy
Once an animal is harvested, we field dress, skin, and salt it straight away. Trophies are labeled and kept separate, and we work with reputable taxidermists and dip-and-pack services.
Before your safari, we can discuss taxidermy options and timelines. You’re welcome to visit a studio while you’re here if you’d like.
Health and Safety
Rocklands is in a malaria-free area. Our PHs are qualified and experienced, and we follow firearm and safety procedures at all times.
We hunt ethically, legally, and responsibly.
