Bow Hunting in Africa

Bow hunting in Africa asks more of you. You need patience. You need quiet feet. You need discipline when a good animal steps in and your heart starts doing its own thing. You need to know when to draw, when to hold, and when to let the animal walk.

That is why bow hunting in Africa is so rewarding. At Rocklands Safaris, in the malaria-free Eastern Cape of South Africa, we guide hunters who want a proper African hunting experience. Some come with rifles. Some come with bows. Some have hunted Africa before. Others are stepping onto African soil for the first time, bow case in hand, wondering what the bush is really going to ask of them.

If that is you, this guide will answer the questions most bow hunters ask before booking an African safari.

The key is planning your hunt properly. Bow hunting is close-range hunting. You need the right equipment, realistic expectations, and a PH who understands how bow hunters work.

Is South Africa a good destination for bow hunting?

South Africa is one of the best places to start if you want to bow hunt in Africa. You have a strong variety of game species, well-managed private hunting areas, good lodge facilities, and experienced professional hunters. You also avoid some of the complications found in more remote African destinations, especially if this is your first international hunting trip.

At Rocklands, you hunt in the Eastern Cape near Fort Beaufort. The area is malaria-free, which makes travel easier for many international hunters and families. The terrain offers enough variety to keep the hunt interesting, with dense bush, open areas, hills, valleys, and enough natural cover to test you properly.

This is not flat, predictable shooting. You will need to hunt.

What animals can you bow hunt in Africa?

Most bow hunters begin with plains game. These species offer excellent hunting, strong trophy quality, and a proper African experience without jumping straight into dangerous game.

Good plains game species for bow hunting may include:

Each animal brings a different challenge. Impala are alert and quick. Warthog rarely stand still for long. Kudu can melt into the bush. Wildebeest are tough animals and need excellent shot placement. Your species list should match your bow setup, experience level, shooting confidence, and the number of hunting days you have available.

  • Exclusions include items such as airfares, taxidermy, ammunition, firearm or bow rental, gratuities, trophy shipping, and animals taken outside the package. Wounded animals are paid for in full.

Here are some popular Rocklands Safaris package options.

Can you customise a bow hunting package?

bow hunting packages south africa

Yes. In fact, for bow hunters, custom packages often make the most sense. Every bow hunter arrives with different goals. Some want a classic plains game hunt. Some want to focus on kudu. Some want to hunt from blinds. Some want to combine bow hunting with rifle hunting. Some are travelling with family and need non-hunting activities built into the trip.

We can customise your package around your species list, hunting method, experience, budget, and available days. Our packages can also be tailored for beginners or experienced hunters, and 2-on-1 packages are available on request.

Is bow hunting in Africa done from blinds or spot-and-stalk?

Both are possible, but bow hunting in Africa is often done from blinds or hides, especially where close shot opportunities are needed.

  • A blind gives you the best chance of getting within ethical bow range. African animals are sharp. They live with predators. They notice small movements. They pick up sound quickly. Sitting quietly in a good position near a water source, trail, or feeding area can be the most effective method.
  • Spot-and-stalk bow hunting is possible, but it is difficult. The wind, cover, terrain, animal behaviour, and your own movement all have to work together. When it comes together, it is one of the finest ways to hunt. When it does not, the bush will remind you who is in charge.

How close do you need to be for bow hunting in Africa?

Most bow hunting opportunities happen at close range. You should prepare for shots inside 30 yards, and you should be very comfortable at those distances before you arrive. Rocklands’ own hunting information notes that bow hunting requires patience, quiet sits, and shot opportunities often under 30 yards.

Do not only practise perfect broadside shots on a calm range. Practise from sitting positions. Practise in low light. Practise after holding at full draw. Practise with your hunting broadheads. Practise judging distance without relying only on a rangefinder. The better prepared you are, the calmer you will be when an animal steps in.

What bow setup do you need for African plains game?

Your setup must be powerful enough for the species you plan to hunt, and accurate enough for clean shot placement. For smaller plains game such as impala, springbuck, blesbuck and warthog, many experienced hunters arrive with a well-tuned compound bow in the 60–70 lb range. For larger, tougher animals such as wildebeest, kudu, gemsbuck and eland, you need enough draw weight, arrow weight, and broadhead strength to achieve reliable penetration.

Bring a setup you know well. Africa is not the place to test a new bow, new arrows, or new broadheads for the first time.

bow hunting in south africa

A good African bow hunting setup should include:

  • A properly tuned compound bow
  • Heavy, durable arrows
  • Strong fixed-blade broadheads
  • Backup strings or cables if possible
  • Spare release aid
  • Spare sight pins or components
  • Rangefinder
  • Extra arrows
  • Bow case suitable for international travel

If you are unsure whether your setup is right for your target species, speak to us before you travel. We would rather help you prepare properly than fix preventable problems in camp.

What broadheads should you use for African game?

For most African plains game, we prefer strong, sharp, fixed-blade broadheads. Mechanical broadheads can work in certain conditions, but Africa is full of tough animals. Wildebeest, warthog, gemsbuck and eland are not soft targets. You want penetration, strength, and reliability.

Shot placement still matters more than gear. A heavy arrow and good broadhead will not save a poor shot. But when your shot is right, proper equipment gives you the best chance of a clean, ethical result.

Can beginners bow hunt in Africa?

Yes, beginners can bow hunt in Africa, but you need to be honest about your ability. If you are a new bow hunter, start with suitable plains game. Do not build your first safari around the most difficult species on the list. You will enjoy the experience more if your goals match your skill level.

At Rocklands, we tailor the hunt around you. If you are new to Africa but experienced with a bow, we will guide you accordingly. If you are newer to bow hunting, we will help you choose realistic species and hunting methods. The goal is not to rush you into a shot. The goal is to give you a fair, ethical hunting experience you will be proud of.

Can you bow hunt dangerous game in Africa?

Dangerous game bow hunting is a specialist pursuit and not something to take lightly.

Cape buffalo is one of Africa’s most respected and dangerous animals. We do offer buffalo hunting packages, including the Buffalo Special at $8,500 for 5 days, Buffalo Cow at $3,250 for 5 days, and Buffalo & Sable at $12,900 for 7 days.

However, bow hunting dangerous game requires serious experience, the correct equipment, and careful PH guidance. If dangerous game is your goal, let’s discuss your experience, setup, expectations, and safety before recommending the right approach.

What happens if you wound an animal?

If an animal is wounded, it is paid for in full. That is standard ethical hunting practice and is clearly listed in our exclusions.

This is why shot discipline matters. With bow hunting, you may need to pass on animals that rifle hunters could take. You may wait longer. You may have fewer opportunities. That is part of the hunt. If a shot is taken, we follow up properly with the PH, trackers, and available resources. Our focus is always on recovery, respect for the animal, and responsible hunting.

Can non-hunters come with you?

Yes. Non-hunting companions are welcome at Rocklands.

Many hunters travel with a spouse, partner, family member, or friend. They can relax at the lodge, enjoy the pool, take in the views, read, walk, join photographic safaris, visit nearby towns, or enjoy arranged outings. We can also arrange activities such as game fishing, Cape Town tours, Garden Route tours, and Wine Route trips as part of a broader South African experience. That makes Rocklands a strong option if you want your bow hunting safari to be part of a memorable trip for more than just the hunter.

When is the best time for bow hunting in South Africa?

The cooler, drier months are often the most popular for hunting in South Africa. Winter hunting conditions can make hunting more comfortable, especially for international hunters who do not want extreme heat. Vegetation can also thin out, and animals may move more predictably around water and feeding areas.

That said, the best time depends on your target species, preferred hunting style, and package. If bow hunting is your main focus, we will help you choose dates that suit your goals.

How many days should you book for a bow hunting safari?

With bow hunting, more time helps. A five-day package can work well for a focused species list. A seven-day hunt gives you more room to work with weather, animal movement, and shot opportunities. A ten-day hunt is ideal if you want a fuller plains game safari or you are travelling a long distance and want to make the most of your time in Africa.

Bow hunting rewards patience. If your budget allows, give yourself enough days to hunt properly.

Is bow hunting in Africa ethical?

ethical bow hunting africa

Bow hunting is ethical when it is done with the right equipment, proper shot placement, realistic distances, and professional guidance. At Rocklands, we take ethics and conservation seriously. Our hunting is guided by respect for the animal, conservation, and responsible wildlife management. The farm is run with a clear commitment to conservation and sustainability, including breeding programmes, habitat improvement, dam renovation, fencing improvements, firebreak monitoring, and educational tours for local children.

A good bow hunter knows when to shoot. A better bow hunter knows when not to.
